While mercury can measure very high temperature as it has very high boiling point about 357 degree Celsius while alcohol has boiling point of only 78 degree Celsius. So generally it is better to use alcohol temperature for the measurement of very cold place and it is better to use mercury thermometer for hot places. Mercury are shiny liquids and it is easier to take the readings without any additive dyes while alcohol needs a in the thermometer for easy reading. Alcohol thermometers respond faster than the mercury thermometer. While mercury thermometer may have slower response time than the alcohol thermometer but mercury thermometer is generally more accurate than the alcohol thermometer.

Resistance Thermometer

The process by which an electron disseminates within metallic wires is explained by electrical resistance. The amount of dissemination of an electron is effected by the temperature and this became the basis of development of resistance thermometer. A wire which is generally made by platinum is curled into a coil and is put on a steel tube in such type of thermometer. The electrical resistance increases with the increase in the temperature of the environment and decreases with the decrease in temperature. The temperature is monitored on the basis of the amount of electrical resistance and the reading is shown in the digital display of the device. The resistance thermometer can show its readings much faster than the mercury thermometer and nowadays more popular in the weather department.

Bimetallic Strip Thermometer

In this type of thermometer there are two strips of different metal which are mounted on top of each other. Since different metals have different thermal expansion coefficient a rise or fall in the temperature of the environment makes the strip bend with an angle. The change of temperature can easily be measured with the help of angle created. This bimetallic strip thermometer is generally useful as a thermostat or outdoor thermometer.

Constant Volume Thermometer

This type of thermometer consists of a bulb and a mercury manometer. The bulb is filled with a certain amount of gas and is connected to a mercury manometer. The change in temperature brings about the change in the pressure of gas in the bulb and the change in pressure is measured with the mercury manometer. These thermometers are one of the most accurate type of thermometer and hence are used for the calibration of other thermometers.
