What is Active type Cable extender?

USB cable extenders come in two types ie. Active and Passive. Passive extenders are normal ones which might cause loss of data over 1.5 meter length.

Active extenders have in buit electronic circuitry which will prevent loss of data and can be used for longer distances upto 25 meter. The electronic circuitry is self powered from the computer and does not need any auxiliary power supply.

The power consumption will be 3-5 mA only.

Also such multiple cables can be connected together for longer distances.

In appearance both passive and active cables look identical. However for active cable, the connector at one end will be slightly bigger which contains the electronic circuitry.

It does not require any additional drivers and is a plug and play device

How do you decide whether you need Active or Passive extender?

It involves lot of parameters including the type and volume of data transmission. However as a thumb rule, if you need to transfer data for more than 2 meters, it is preferred to use Active extender.
